If you're running your Instagram presence, you've probably noticed Instagram gives you two "professional" account options: Business and Creator. They look nearly identical on the surface, but a few real differences can affect how far your content reaches and what you can do with it especially in CloudSpot
Short answer: if you're an individual building a personal brand, especially one that leans on Reels, a Creator account is usually the better fit.
Here is a breakdown of differences:
Feature | Creator Account | Business Account |
Music library for Reels/Stories | Full library, including trending/popular songs | Limited to commercially-licensed and royalty-free tracks only |
Insights (reach, engagement, audience demographics) | ✅ Included | ✅ Included |
Monetization (Subscriptions, Live Badges, Reels bonuses) | ✅ Available | ❌ Not available |
Creator Marketplace (brand deal matching) | ✅ Eligible | ❌ Not eligible |
Instagram Shopping / product catalog | ❌ Not available | ✅ Available |
Contact buttons (call, directions, book) | Limited | Full set, including physical address |
Profile category label | Personal-brand labels (e.g., "Digital Creator," "Musician") | Business-type labels |
How to check which account type you currently have
Open the Instagram app and go to your profile.
Tap the menu icon (☰) in the top right corner.
Tap Settings and activity (or Settings and privacy, depending on your app version).
Tap Account type and tools.
Your current account type (Personal, Business, or Creator) is displayed at the top of this screen.
Why Creator accounts are worth switching to
1. Full access to Instagram's music library
Here's the thing: Business accounts only get commercially-cleared audio, thanks to licensing rules. Creator accounts get the whole library, same trending sounds everyone's using in their Reels feed. And since trending audio is one of the strongest signals the Reels algorithm looks for, that gap can quietly cap how far your content travels if Reels are part of your strategy.
2. Monetization tools Business accounts just don't have.
Creator accounts can turn on paid Subscriptions, earn badges during Live broadcasts, and (where it's available) grab Reels bonuses. Business accounts skip straight to Shopping and ads instead, no in-app monetization perks.
3. Creator Marketplace eligibility.
Brands can find and pitch Creator accounts directly through Instagram's built-in Creator Marketplace. Business accounts don't get an invite.
4. Full Insights either way.
Common myth: only one account type gets real analytics. Not true: both get Instagram Insights (audience demographics, reach, engagement). So switching to Creator isn't a trade-off. You pick up music access and monetization, and keep every bit of your insights.
When Business is still the right call
Selling physical products? Running checkout through Instagram Shopping? Need a storefront address or booking button on your profile? Stick with Business because Creator accounts just don't have those features.
Can you switch back and forth?
Yep. It's free, instant, and fully reversible. Followers, posts, Reels, Stories highlights, past analytics, none of it moves. You're just flipping which features are on.
One catch: switch away from Business and your Instagram Shop goes dormant (not gone). Switch back, and you'll need to reconnect it.
